Symptoms & treatment

Neck Complaints

Neck complaints are, after lower back pain, the most common reason people visit a physiotherapist. They can range from a stiff neck after a bad night's sleep to radiating pain down the arm caused by a trapped nerve. At Shane Gnade Physiotherapy in Almere we treat the cause, not just the symptom.

Acute and chronic neck pain

Neck pain can appear suddenly, after an awkward movement or sleeping position, or build up gradually from long periods of sitting or poor work posture. Chronic neck pain often comes with muscle tension, reduced mobility and headaches. We thoroughly assess the neck, treat the muscular tension and improve joint mobility.

Whiplash

Whiplash occurs from a sudden, fast forward-and-backward movement of the head, often after a car accident or sports incident. Symptoms include neck pain, headaches, dizziness, fatigue and sometimes difficulty concentrating. Whiplash has a wide-ranging impact and requires a patient, gradual approach. We work step by step on restoring movement, strength and load tolerance.

Radiating pain into the arm

When a nerve in the neck becomes compressed, for example by a disc problem or joint condition, pain, tingling or weakness can radiate into the shoulder, arm or hand. This is known as cervical radiculopathy. With targeted treatment we reduce pressure on the nerve and strengthen the surrounding muscles.

Tension headaches

Many people don't realise their headaches actually originate in the neck. Tension headaches develop from tight muscles in the neck and shoulders that irritate the nerves leading to the head. Dry needling, massage and specific neck exercises can significantly reduce, or even resolve, this type of headache.
