How does cupping work?
During cupping, silicone or glass cups are placed on the skin. The vacuum created gently draws the skin and underlying tissue upward. It sounds uncomfortable, but most people actually find it relaxing. The effect is similar to a deep massage, but from the inside out. We use cups on fixed spots or move them slowly across the skin, known as sliding cupping.
What can it be used for?
Cupping is effective for persistent tension in the back, neck and shoulders, fascia issues, recovery after intense training, scar tissue, and poor circulation in a specific area. At our practice it's always used as part of a broader treatment plan, never as a standalone technique.
Those round marks, what are they?
After cupping, round, red to purple marks can appear on the skin. Many people are startled by this, but they are not bruises. They're superficial blood marks caused by blood being drawn to the skin's surface. They're painless, fade within three to seven days, and are actually a sign the treatment has worked well.
Hijama: cupping with blood
Alongside regular cupping, Shane also offers hijama, also known as wet cupping or blood cupping. Hijama is an ancient method where, after placing the cups, small superficial incisions are made in the skin. This draws out a small amount of blood along with waste products and stagnant tissue fluid.
The background and benefits of hijama
Hijama has been practised for centuries in Islamic medicine and is increasingly popular in western countries too. Many people experience it as a deep cleanse for the body. The treatment is safe, performed with sterile materials, and painless. It can help with chronic fatigue, persistent muscle pain, headaches, high blood pressure, a weakened immune system, and a general feeling of being 'stuck' in the body.
Is cupping right for you?
If you're dealing with stubborn muscle tension that hasn't responded well to other treatments, cupping or hijama is certainly worth trying. During the intake we discuss whether it suits your complaint and combine it with other techniques for the best result.
